Description
A dramatic depiction of Mount Sinai by El Greco, showing the transition between his Byzantine roots and the expressive style of his later career.
This work, painted during the artist's period in Venice, demonstrates the transition from his early training in the Cretan icon tradition to the expressive, elongated forms that define his later career. The panel depicts the biblical site of Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments. The composition is structured around a central, towering peak, flanked by two smaller, dark rock formations that frame the scene.
At the base of the mountain, a small monastery is rendered with architectural precision, contrasting with the fluid, almost ethereal treatment of the surrounding terrain. The sky is filled with swirling, turbulent clouds, rendered in shades of ochre and muted pink, which suggest a supernatural atmosphere. Figures are scattered across the foreground, their small scale emphasising the immense, imposing nature of the mountain itself. The artist employs a palette dominated by earth tones, deep browns, and shadows, which are punctuated by the light emanating from the summit.
This piece reflects the influence of Venetian painting, particularly the work of Titian and Tintoretto, in its use of light and atmospheric effects. However, the influence of Byzantine iconography remains present in the flattened perspective and the deliberate, non-naturalistic arrangement of the elements. The panel is shaped at the top, a feature common to devotional objects of the period. It provides a view into the early development of an artist who would go on to create some of the most distinctive religious imagery in Western art history. The focus remains on the spiritual weight of the location, achieved through dramatic lighting and a sense of movement within the rock formations.
