Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, was a prominent figure of the early Qing Dynasty. As a member of the Ming royal family who became a Buddhist monk, his work reflects a life of displacement and personal reflection. This ink wash painting demonstrates his characteristic approach to the genre, where the physical act of painting becomes a direct expression of the artist's internal state. The composition utilises a vertical orientation, guiding the viewer's eye through a series of receding planes. A small pavilion sits on a hillside, providing a human scale against the broader, atmospheric mountain forms.
