Robert Henri, a central figure in the development of American modernism, visited Santa Fe, New Mexico, on several occasions between 1916 and 1922. This work captures the distinct light and architectural forms of the region. Henri moved away from the darker, urban palettes associated with his earlier work in Philadelphia and New York, adopting a brighter, more expressive approach to colour during his time in the American Southwest.

The composition focuses on the adobe structure, rendered in warm, sun-drenched yellows that contrast with the deep, cool shadows cast across the foreground. Henri employs a loose, painterly technique, prioritising the immediate impression of the scene over precise detail. The brushwork is energetic, suggesting the texture of the earthen walls and the arid ground. A single, dark tree stands to the right, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal lines of the building and the distant hills.

This piece reflects Henri's interest in the raw, unadorned character of the New Mexican environment. He sought to capture the spirit of the place through simplified forms and a direct application of paint.
