The figure is grounded in the earth, his feet large and calloused, gripping the soil. He holds a hoe, a tool that connects him directly to the vast coffee plantation stretching out behind him.

Portinari employs a distinct visual language here. The background features rows of coffee plants receding into the distance, punctuated by a train, which suggests the industrialisation of the agricultural process. The terrain is rendered in earthy, reddish tones, contrasting with the pale sky. The composition uses a monumental approach to the human form, a technique Portinari developed after his travels in Europe, where he encountered the works of the Italian Renaissance and the Mexican muralists.
