Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, remains a figure of immense importance within the history of Chinese painting. As a member of the Ming dynasty imperial family who became a Buddhist monk following the fall of the dynasty, his work often reflects a sense of personal isolation and a rejection of rigid academic conventions. This piece, On the Lotus Pond, demonstrates his characteristic approach to the literati tradition, where the artist prioritises individual expression and spontaneity over strict adherence to established formulas.

The composition features a cluster of lotus flowers and broad leaves, rendered with a combination of fluid, calligraphic brushwork and subtle ink washes.
