Theodore Clement Steele, a central figure in the Hoosier Group of painters, produced this work during a period of travel to the Pacific Northwest. The composition captures the rugged geography of the Oregon shoreline, where steep, weathered cliffs meet the expansive Pacific Ocean. Steele employs a technique characterised by broken brushwork and a focus on the atmospheric conditions of the coast, reflecting the influence of European Impressionism on his practice.

The palette is dominated by warm, sandy ochres in the foreground, which contrast with the cooler, violet-toned waters and the hazy, light-filled sky.
