Josephus Augustus Knip, a Dutch painter active during the early nineteenth century, produced this detailed study of the ruins known as the Temple of Minerva Medica in Rome. The work captures the decaying grandeur of the structure, which is actually a nymphaeum from the early fourth century rather than a temple. Knip focuses on the juxtaposition between the monumental, crumbling brick arches and the mundane activities of rural life occurring within the shelter of the ruins.
