Originally discovered in Rome in 1506, the sculpture portrays the Trojan priest Laocoon and his two sons as they struggle against the coils of sea serpents sent by the gods. De Bisschop, a Dutch lawyer and amateur artist, produced this work as part of his collection, 'Signorum Veterum Icones', which aimed to document classical statues for the benefit of artists and students in the Netherlands.
