This triptych by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts a dramatic scene from the Genpei War, specifically the Battle of Ikuta. As one of the final masters of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Yoshitoshi utilised the woodblock medium to capture intense kinetic energy and historical narrative. The composition features samurai engaged in combat amidst the dark, atmospheric branches of plum trees, which provide a stark contrast to the colourful, detailed armour worn by the warriors.

Yoshitoshi was known for his ability to infuse traditional subjects with a sense of psychological tension and movement.
