This portrait, attributed to the Cretan-born painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, captures an unidentified nobleman associated with the Casa de Leiva. Painted during the artist's period in Toledo, the work reflects the austere aesthetic prevalent among the Spanish aristocracy of the late sixteenth century. The sitter is depicted against a dark, neutral background, which directs the viewer's attention to his facial features and the precise rendering of his attire.

El Greco employs a restrained palette, dominated by the deep black of the doublet and the stark white of the ruff collar. The brushwork is controlled, allowing for a realistic depiction of the textures in the fabric and the subtle modelling of the face.
