John Riley was a prominent English portrait painter during the late seventeenth century, serving as a court painter to William III and Mary II. His work is recognised for a psychological depth that often departed from the more idealised court portraiture of his contemporaries. This oval composition depicts a gentleman dressed in steel armour, a common convention for military officers or members of the gentry during the period. The sitter wears a voluminous periwig, which frames his face and draws attention to his direct, steady gaze.

Riley employs a restrained palette, dominated by deep browns and shadows that recede into the background. This technique, influenced by the chiaroscuro methods of the era, creates a sense of volume and presence.
