This portrait depicts Antoine, the illegitimate son of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Painted by Rogier van der Weyden around 1460, the work captures the subject in a three-quarter view, a standard convention for aristocratic portraiture of the period. Antoine is dressed in a dark doublet, which provides a stark contrast to his pale complexion and the deep blue background. He wears the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious chivalric order, which identifies his status and connection to the Burgundian court.
