Description
A detailed eighteenth-century engraving by Jacob Houbraken depicting the Dutch statesman and poet Jacob Cats, presented in a classic oval frame.
This engraving depicts the Dutch poet and statesman Jacob Cats (1577-1660). The work is by the Dutch engraver Jacob Houbraken, who produced this portrait after an original painting by Michiel van Mierevelt. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture, presenting the subject within a trompe-l'oeil oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth.
Cats is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the formal attire of his era, including a prominent ruff collar and a fur-trimmed garment. The precision of the engraving technique allows for a clear rendering of textures, from the soft folds of the ruff to the individual strands of hair and the subtle shading of the facial features. The inscription on the plinth identifies the sitter as the Raad-Pensionaris of Holland, a position of significant political authority during the Dutch Golden Age.
Houbraken was a master of the burin, known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the monochromatic medium of print. His work often appeared in historical collections and biographies, serving to document the appearance of notable figures for a wider audience. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition reflect the technical standards of the period. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Netherlands, where portraiture served as a primary means of recording the identity and status of public figures. The inclusion of the artist's name and the sitter's title on the base provides a formal, archival quality to the image, typical of the prints produced for historical documentation during the mid-eighteenth century.
