Antoine Pesne, a painter who spent much of his career in the service of the Prussian court, produced this depiction of the classical myth of Pygmalion and Galatea. The narrative, drawn from Ovid, concerns a sculptor who falls in love with his own creation, an ivory statue that is brought to life by Venus.

Pesne captures the moment of transformation with the characteristic lightness of the Rococo period. The composition is arranged to guide the eye from the sculptor, Pygmalion, standing in profile on the right, toward the central figure of Galatea. She is shown in a state of transition, her form possessing the soft, pale quality of marble while her posture and expression suggest the awakening of human consciousness. Above them, Venus and a group of putti descend from the clouds, orchestrating the miracle.

The artist employs a palette of muted tones, typical of his work for royal interiors, which allows the soft illumination of the figures to take precedence. The drapery and the surrounding architectural elements are rendered with fluid brushwork, avoiding rigid outlines. The scene is theatrical, reflecting the period's interest in staged mythological encounters and the decorative function of such paintings within a palace setting.
