This etching by the Dutch artist Caspar Luyken depicts the personification of Rhetoric, one of the seven liberal arts. Luyken, a member of a prominent family of engravers and illustrators in Amsterdam, produced this work during the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. The composition follows the conventions of Baroque allegory, employing a structured arrangement of figures and symbolic objects to convey its subject.

In the foreground, a seated female figure represents Rhetoric. She holds a stylus and a scroll, symbols of written and spoken persuasion.
