Commissioned during the reign of Napoleon III, this project aimed to unify the two royal residences into a single, cohesive complex. The album cover itself is a fine example of mid-nineteenth-century French bookbinding, featuring a deep green leather surface with gold-tooled accents.

At the centre of the cover sits the imperial coat of arms, rendered in gold leaf. The design incorporates the eagle, a symbol associated with the Napoleonic regime, surrounded by ornate drapery and topped with an imperial crown. Each corner of the cover is marked with a gold-tooled letter N, surmounted by a small crown, reinforcing the imperial identity of the collection. The spine shows evidence of traditional binding techniques, with raised bands typical of high-quality nineteenth-century library volumes.

Édouard Denis Baldus, a photographer and artist, was tasked with recording the progress of this massive construction effort. His work provided a visual record of the architectural transformation of Paris under the direction of the Emperor and his urban planners. While the interior of the album contains photographic plates, the exterior serves as a formal presentation object, designed to reflect the prestige of the commission. The texture of the leather and the precision of the gold tooling demonstrate the high standards of craftsmanship applied to official state documentation during this period.
