Description
A detailed 1565 engraving by Cornelis Cort depicting the rescue of Angelica from a sea monster, based on the epic poem Orlando Furioso.
This engraving by Cornelis Cort depicts a scene from Ludovico Ariosto's epic poem, Orlando Furioso. The narrative follows the knight Rogero, who descends from the clouds on a hippogriff to rescue the princess Angelica. She is chained to a rock, threatened by a sea monster. Cort, a Dutch engraver who spent his later years in Italy, demonstrates his technical mastery through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching to define form and texture. The composition is expansive, placing the dramatic rescue within a wider, atmospheric setting that includes architectural ruins and a distant bridge.
Cort was instrumental in the dissemination of Italian Renaissance styles to Northern Europe. His work often involved translating the paintings of masters like Titian into the medium of print. In this piece, the influence of Venetian art is visible in the treatment of the human figure and the atmospheric depth of the background. The scene balances the central action with a detailed environment, where the rugged terrain and the inclusion of a skull in the foreground add a sense of danger and mortality to the mythological encounter. The print reflects the period's interest in classical literature and the technical precision required for high-quality copperplate engraving. The lines are controlled and deliberate, creating a sense of volume in the figures and depth in the surrounding topography. This work remains a clear example of the collaborative nature of printmaking during the sixteenth century, where the engraver acted as both interpreter and creator of visual narratives.
