Annibale Carracci, an Italian painter and printmaker of the late 16th century, is known for his contribution to the development of the Baroque style. Carracci, along with his brother Agostino and cousin Ludovico, founded an art academy in Bologna that promoted a return to classical principles, moving away from Mannerism. His work often combines elements of Venetian colourism with the compositional clarity of the Roman school. 'Römische Landschaft' depicts an idyllic scene with classical ruins and figures engaged in leisurely activities. The painting features a river flowing through the centre, with boats carrying people. A ruined aqueduct spans the river, connecting to a tower-like structure on the right. In the foreground, figures are shown playing music.
