A striking example of Neo-Primitivism, this work captures a traditional Russian folk dance through bold forms and a rhythmic, flattened composition.
Natalia Goncharova produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with Russian folk traditions and modern European avant-garde techniques. The painting depicts a group of women engaged in a traditional circle dance, a subject that frequently appeared in her early oeuvre. Her approach combines the simplified, bold forms of Russian lubok prints and icon painting with the structural sensibilities of contemporary movements like Fauvism and Cubism. The figures are rendered with heavy, deliberate brushwork and a flattened sense of space. Goncharova avoids traditional perspective, choosing instead to arrange the dancers in a rhythmic, circular formation that emphasises the communal nature of the activity. The colour palette is dominated by deep blues, earthy tones, and sharp accents of yellow and white, which serve to define the clothing and the surrounding environment. The faces are treated with a degree of abstraction, focusing on the collective movement rather than individual portraiture. This work reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of rural heritage and urban modernism. By stripping away academic detail, Goncharova captures the raw energy of the dance. The composition relies on the repetition of the figures' postures and the interlocking of their hands to create a sense of continuous motion. This piece is representative of the Neo-Primitivist style, which sought to revitalise Russian art by looking back to indigenous visual culture while adopting the formal innovations of the early twentieth century. The result is a direct, unadorned depiction of folk life that maintains a strong graphic quality.
