Description
A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Israël Silvestre depicting the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, capturing its architectural form and the surrounding square.
This etching by the French draughtsman and printmaker Israël Silvestre depicts the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. Silvestre, who spent significant time in Italy during the mid-seventeenth century, produced a large body of work documenting the city's architectural and urban character. His approach to the veduta, or view painting, prioritises clarity and topographical precision over atmospheric effects.
The composition centres on the basilica, with the Marian Column standing prominently in the foreground. Silvestre employs a refined etching technique, using controlled hatching and cross-hatching to define the structural elements of the church, including its domes and the Romanesque campanile. The surrounding square is populated with small, sketch-like figures, which provide a sense of scale and daily activity. The trees to the right are rendered with characteristic linear patterns, typical of the period's printmaking style.
Silvestre's work was widely circulated across Europe, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge regarding Roman monuments. His prints were often collected by travellers on the Grand Tour, who sought visual records of their experiences. This particular view captures the basilica as it appeared in the seventeenth century, documenting the interplay between the ancient column and the layered architectural history of the church. The inclusion of Latin and French text at the base of the print identifies the location as one of the major stations of Rome, reflecting the religious and cultural significance of the site during the era. The print demonstrates the technical skill of Silvestre, who was appointed drawing master to the young Louis XIV, and his ability to translate complex architectural forms into a readable, monochromatic medium.
