The artist, known as the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet (or the Master of the Housebook), was a significant figure in late fifteenth-century German printmaking. The work displays the characteristic soft, velvety lines achieved through the drypoint technique, which allows for a painterly quality rarely seen in contemporary copperplate engravings of the period.

Christopher is shown in a strained, forward-leaning posture, his weight supported by a thick staff that doubles as a balancing tool against the current. His heavy, layered garments are rendered with precise hatching, creating a sense of volume and texture. The Christ Child sits atop his shoulders, holding an orb, with a delicate halo radiating light.
