This engraving by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert depicts Saint Francis Xavier, the Jesuit missionary, in a moment of spiritual contemplation. Bolswert, a master of the burin, worked closely with Peter Paul Rubens to translate the painterly qualities of the Flemish Baroque into the precise medium of printmaking. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century religious iconography, placing the saint in a three-quarter view with his gaze directed upward toward a divine light source.

Bolswert employs a sophisticated range of line weights to define the textures within the scene.
