Ross, an American polymath and collector who held a position at Harvard University, frequently travelled to Europe to study historical painting techniques. The composition maintains the dynamic energy of the original Renaissance source. The central action features the mounted knight engaged with the beast, while the figure of the princess occupies the foreground in a state of agitation. Ross employs a fluid, expressive application of watercolour, allowing the pigments to bleed into one another to suggest the atmospheric conditions of the scene.
