The Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, also known as the Master of the Housebook, is a significant figure in late fifteenth-century German printmaking. His work is identified by a distinct, fluid line quality achieved through the use of the drypoint needle, which creates a softer, more painterly effect than the rigid lines of traditional copperplate engraving.
In this composition, Saint George is clad in contemporary plate armour, reflecting the fashion of the period rather than historical accuracy. He drives his sword into the beast, which occupies the lower right foreground. To the left, the princess stands in a calm, upright posture, her presence providing a vertical balance to the dynamic struggle occurring before her. The background features a fortified castle perched upon a rocky outcrop, a common motif in the artist's oeuvre that provides a sense of scale and setting.
