This engraving by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert depicts Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. Bolswert, a skilled engraver from the Dutch Republic, worked closely with Peter Paul Rubens to translate the painter's compositions into print. The work displays the technical precision characteristic of Bolswert, who utilised varied line weights to create depth and texture within the saint's vestments and the surrounding atmosphere.

Ignatius is shown in a standing position, his gaze directed upward toward a celestial light containing the IHS monogram. He wears an ornate chasuble decorated with scrolling patterns, which contrasts with the simpler fabric of his alb. His left hand rests upon an open book inscribed with the Jesuit motto, Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam. The composition is balanced by a stone pedestal on the right and a biretta suspended in the upper left corner. The background features dramatic clouds and a radiant halo, elements that reflect the theatricality of the Baroque period.

Bolswert's mastery of the burin allows for a subtle gradation of tone, particularly in the rendering of the saint's face and the luminous quality of the light emanating from above.
