Marcantonio Raimondi, a figure of immense influence in the history of printmaking, produced this engraving during the Italian High Renaissance. The composition depicts Saint Jerome, the scholar and hermit, seated in a remote setting. He is absorbed in his reading, a common iconographic choice that emphasises his role as a translator of the Vulgate Bible. Beside him, the lion, his traditional attribute, is rendered with careful attention to form and texture.

Raimondi utilised the burin to create a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows within the rocky outcrop to the lighter, more open lines defining the distant architecture and sky. The technique demonstrates the precision characteristic of his work, which often involved the reproduction of compositions by other masters, including Raphael.
