A hand-coloured woodcut by Swiss Renaissance artist Urs Graf, depicting Saint John the Evangelist receiving divine inspiration on the island of Patmos.
This hand-coloured woodcut depicts Saint John the Evangelist during his exile on the island of Patmos. The composition follows a traditional iconographic format, showing the saint seated in a rocky, natural setting while recording his visions. An eagle, the traditional attribute of Saint John, appears beside him, while a celestial light emanates from the upper right corner, representing the divine inspiration for the Book of Revelation. Urs Graf was a Swiss Renaissance artist known for his work in metalwork, drawing, and printmaking. His graphic style often features energetic, expressive lines that reflect the turbulent nature of the period. In this woodcut, the bold outlines define the forms of the saint and the surrounding foliage, while the application of colour adds a decorative quality common to early sixteenth-century book illustrations. The artist's monogram, VG, is visible in the lower right corner, a characteristic mark of his production. The work demonstrates the technical constraints and aesthetic choices of early woodblock printing. The lines are direct and functional, designed to be legible even at a small scale. The hand-colouring, applied after the printing process, uses a limited palette of green, yellow, and muted red to differentiate the elements of the scene. This piece offers a glimpse into the devotional imagery produced for a wider audience during the Reformation era, where such small-scale prints were frequently used for personal prayer or as illustrations in religious texts. The stark contrast between the dark ink lines and the soft washes of colour creates a balance between graphic clarity and pictorial depth, typical of the Swiss school of the early sixteenth century.
