Description
A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Giulio Sanuto depicting Saint John the Baptist in a rocky, atmospheric wilderness.
This engraving by Giulio Sanuto depicts Saint John the Baptist in a rugged, rocky setting. The figure of the saint is rendered with muscular precision, seated with his back to the viewer, gesturing towards a cavernous opening in the stone. Beside him lies a small lamb, a traditional symbol of the Agnus Dei, inscribed on the ground near his hand. The composition draws heavily from the Mannerist tradition, which favoured elongated forms and complex, often theatrical, spatial arrangements.
Sanuto, an Italian engraver active in Venice, demonstrates technical mastery through his use of varied line weights and cross-hatching to define the textures of the stone, the saint's anatomy, and the distant, hilly terrain. The background features a fortified town, providing a sense of scale and distance that contrasts with the immediate, tactile presence of the foreground figure. The light source appears to emanate from the upper left, casting shadows that give volume to the rocky outcrops and the saint's physique.
This work reflects the period's interest in classical anatomy combined with religious iconography. The print is a fine example of sixteenth-century printmaking, where the engraver sought to translate the sculptural qualities of painting into the medium of copperplate engraving. The attention to detail, from the individual curls of the saint's hair to the sparse vegetation on the hillside, reveals the meticulous nature of Sanuto's craft. Collectors of Renaissance prints will appreciate the clarity of the lines and the balanced composition, which remains a characteristic feature of Sanuto's output during his time in Venice.
