This method allowed for a softer, more painterly quality in the lines compared to the rigid precision of traditional copperplate engraving.

The composition focuses on the interaction between the two figures. Saint Martin is rendered with a youthful, serene expression, while the beggar is depicted with a more weathered, realistic appearance.
