Description
A detailed 1545 engraving of Saint Peter by the German Renaissance master Sebald Beham, featuring precise line work and traditional iconography.
This engraving by Sebald Beham, dated 1545, depicts Saint Peter, one of the primary apostles. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was a prolific printmaker based in Nuremberg. His work is characterised by a high degree of technical precision, often executed on a small scale.
In this composition, Saint Peter is shown in a standing pose, holding the traditional attribute of the keys to the kingdom of heaven. The figure is draped in heavy, voluminous robes, with the folds rendered through fine, parallel hatching lines that create a sense of weight and volume. The artist employs a clear, linear style, typical of the German Renaissance tradition. A faint halo surrounds the saint's head, and the inscription 'S. SIMON PETRVS' is visible along the left edge.
To the right, a stone block bears the artist's monogram 'SB' and the date '1545'. The ground is sparsely detailed with small tufts of vegetation and stones, keeping the focus entirely on the figure. Beham's ability to convey form and texture through the medium of engraving is evident in the subtle shading of the drapery and the expressive features of the saint's face. This print reflects the period's interest in classical humanism combined with traditional Christian subjects. The work is a fine example of the technical mastery achieved by the Little Masters, who produced small, highly detailed prints for collectors and scholars of the sixteenth century. The composition is balanced and restrained, adhering to the conventions of religious art while demonstrating the artist's individual approach to line and form.
