Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a series of actor portraits that defined the artist's brief but intense career. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised depictions of actors common in the ukiyo-e tradition of the period. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that exaggerated the facial features and expressions of his subjects.
