John Martin produced this mezzotint in 1824 as part of his series illustrating John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost. The composition depicts the fallen angel, Satan, presiding over his infernal assembly from a throne situated atop a vast, dark sphere. Martin employs the mezzotint process to achieve a dramatic range of tonal values, moving from the deepest blacks of the void to the sharp, luminous highlights of the suspended lamps and the figure of Satan himself.

The scale of the architecture is immense, reflecting Martin's preoccupation with the sublime and the overwhelming power of the natural and supernatural worlds. The tiny, indistinct figures of the fallen angels arranged in tiers around the central sphere provide a sense of scale, emphasising the isolation and authority of the central figure.
