Description

A striking 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the intense expressions of kabuki actors Sawamura Yodogorō II and Bandō Zenji.

This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts two kabuki actors, Sawamura Yodogorō II and Bandō Zenji, in their respective roles as Kawatsura Hōgen and Onisadobō. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to the genre of yakusha-e, or actor prints, which were popular in Edo-period Japan. Sharaku is known for his unconventional approach to portraiture, often exaggerating the facial features and expressions of his subjects to capture the intensity of their stage performances.

The composition focuses on the upper bodies of the two figures. The actor on the right, Sawamura Yodogorō II, looms over the figure of Bandō Zenji, who is positioned slightly lower in the frame. Sharaku employs a mica background, a technique that provides a shimmering, metallic surface, which directs the viewer's attention to the actors. The lines are bold and deliberate, defining the contours of the faces and the elaborate patterns of the costumes. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of ochre, black, and red to convey the dramatic atmosphere of the theatre.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who idealised their subjects, Sharaku chose to present the actors with a raw, almost grotesque quality. This approach provides a direct look at the theatricality of kabuki, where exaggerated gestures and facial expressions were essential for communicating emotion to the audience. The print serves as a record of a specific performance, capturing the tension between the two characters. The precise placement of the figures creates a sense of immediate interaction, as if the viewer is witnessing a moment of conflict on the stage. This print remains a significant example of the artist's brief but highly productive career in the printmaking industry of late 18th-century Japan.
