This woodblock print originates from the Harusame surimono-jō, or Spring Rain Surimono Album, a collection of private commissions by the artist Totoya Hokkei. Surimono prints were produced for a discerning audience of poets and collectors, often featuring a combination of refined imagery and kyōka, a form of humorous or playful waka poetry. Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, adopted his teacher's attention to detail while maintaining a distinct focus on the material culture of the Edo period literati.
