Hasui Kawase produced Snow at Mukojima in 1931, a period when the Shin-hanga movement sought to revitalise traditional Japanese woodblock printing by incorporating Western techniques of light and atmospheric perspective. This work captures a quiet evening along the Sumida River in Tokyo. The composition focuses on the stillness of the water and the heavy accumulation of snow on the moored boats and nearby structures. The artist employs a restricted palette of deep blues, greys, and whites to convey the cold temperature of the scene. Small touches of warm light emanate from the windows of the riverside building, providing a contrast to the surrounding gloom. The falling snow is rendered through a technique of white speckling against the dark background, which creates a sense of depth and movement. A lone figure in a small boat, holding a pale umbrella, serves as the only sign of human activity, reinforcing the isolation of the winter night.
