This engraving, attributed to the Dutch printmaker Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert, depicts a soul suffering within the flames of purgatory. The figure is shown from the waist up, with hands clasped in prayer and eyes directed upwards in a plea for divine intervention. A small angel or spirit appears in the upper left, gesturing towards the suffering figure. The surrounding flames are rendered with rhythmic, flowing lines that create a sense of movement and heat, contrasting with the more static, emotive posture of the central figure.

Below the image, the text provides a Latin inscription from the Book of Job, chapter 19, verse 21: 'Miseremini mei, miseremini mei saltem vos amici mei; quia manus Domini tetigit me.' This translates to 'Have pity on me, have pity on me, at least you my friends; for the hand of God has touched me.' The inclusion of Dutch and French translations beneath the Latin text indicates the print was intended for a broad European audience, common for devotional works of the seventeenth century.
