Description
A geometric abstract composition by British modernist Victor Pasmore, featuring a grid of patterned squares contrasted against a celestial motif.
Victor Pasmore was a central figure in the development of British abstract art. His transition from the lyrical realism of the Euston Road School to the geometric abstraction seen in this work marks a shift in his practice during the late 1940s and early 1950s. This period saw him move away from representational subjects toward a systematic exploration of form, colour, and spatial relationships.
In this composition, Pasmore employs a grid-based structure that organises a variety of geometric shapes. Squares, triangles, and circles are arranged in a rhythmic, modular fashion. The lower portion of the canvas is occupied by these distinct blocks, each containing varied textures, linear patterns, or solid fields of colour. The palette is balanced, combining primary blues and reds with earthy ochres, whites, and blacks.
The upper section introduces a contrasting element: a large, muted ochre field featuring a central dark circle surrounded by swirling, calligraphic lines. This motif suggests a celestial event, providing a sense of movement that breaks the rigidity of the grid below. The work demonstrates Pasmore's interest in the relationship between ordered geometric systems and organic, intuitive mark-making. By juxtaposing the structured grid with the fluid, circular forms, he creates a dialogue between stability and change. The surface texture remains visible, revealing the artist's process and the physical application of paint. This piece is representative of his mid-century output, where he sought to reconcile the rational demands of construction with the expressive potential of abstract painting.
