Hans Baldung, often known as Grien, produced this woodcut during the early sixteenth century. The composition depicts Saint Jerome, a central figure in Christian iconography, kneeling in a rugged, rocky environment. He is shown in his traditional role as a penitent, accompanied by his faithful lion. The artist employs a dense, graphic style, using varied line weights to define the jagged rock formations and the gnarled, expressive trees that frame the scene.

In the background, a small chapel sits nestled within the crags, providing a sense of scale and architectural contrast to the wild, untamed nature of the foreground. The sky is filled with birds, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise static, meditative atmosphere. Baldung was a pupil of Albrecht Dürer, and his work often displays a similar technical precision in printmaking.
