The work depicts the arrival of St. Ursula and her eleven thousand companions at the city of Cologne, a stop on their pilgrimage to Rome. Memling employs a narrative approach, showing the figures disembarking from a ship onto a stone quay. The composition is framed by a painted arch, which creates a sense of depth and invites the viewer into the scene.

The architectural setting reflects the late medieval style of the period, with detailed depictions of city walls, towers, and gabled houses.
