Cornelis Springer was a Dutch painter known for his meticulous depictions of historic town centres. This work, dated 1872, captures a street scene in Harderwijk through a combination of graphite and wash. Springer often travelled across the Netherlands to sketch urban architecture, later refining these observations into finished compositions. His approach balances topographical accuracy with an atmospheric quality, achieved here through the soft application of wash to suggest light and shadow on the building facades.

The composition features a narrow street lined with traditional Dutch houses. The architecture displays characteristic gables and arched doorways, typical of the period. Figures are scattered throughout the scene, engaged in daily activities, which provides a sense of scale and human presence.
