Description
A seminal Pop Art work by Richard Hamilton, depicting Mick Jagger and Robert Fraser in a police car, exploring themes of media spectacle and legal authority.
Swingeing London 67 is a work by Richard Hamilton, produced between 1968 and 1969. The composition derives from a press photograph capturing Robert Fraser and Mick Jagger in the back of a police car. The two men are handcuffed, shielding their faces from the camera lens with their hands. Hamilton utilised this media image to explore the intersection of celebrity culture, legal authority, and the voyeuristic nature of mass media reporting during the late 1960s.
The title is a play on the term Swinging London, a phrase used to describe the cultural scene of the era. Hamilton added the word swingeing, which refers to a severe or punishing action, to comment on the harsh legal response to the drug arrests of the two figures. The painting incorporates collage elements, including actual metal handcuffs attached to the canvas, which adds a physical dimension to the representation of confinement. The blurred, grainy quality of the figures mimics the aesthetic of newspaper reproduction, distancing the viewer from the subjects while simultaneously drawing attention to the artificiality of the image.
This work belongs to a series of prints and paintings that Hamilton developed from the same source material. By manipulating the original photograph, he examines how images are constructed and consumed. The muted colour palette and the focus on the gesture of concealment create a sense of tension. The work functions as a critique of how the press frames public figures, turning private moments of distress into consumable spectacles. Hamilton remains a central figure in British art, and this piece is a primary example of his analytical approach to visual culture.
