Surikov, who grew up in Krasnoyarsk, drew upon his own childhood memories of these winter festivities. The composition balances the chaotic energy of the game with the vast, quiet expanse of the snowy environment. The artist employs a muted palette dominated by whites, greys, and earthy tones, which allows the occasional splash of colour from the participants' clothing to stand out.

This work is a notable example of the Peredvizhniki movement, which sought to depict the realities of Russian life and history.
