Description
A nineteenth-century albumen print by Giorgio Sommer documenting the ruins of the Temple of Fortuna Augusta in Pompeii.
This albumen print by Giorgio Sommer captures the remains of the Temple of Fortuna Augusta in Pompeii. Sommer, a German photographer who established a studio in Naples, produced an extensive catalogue of images documenting the archaeological excavations of the region during the late nineteenth century. His work provided contemporary European audiences with a clear view of the Roman ruins, which were then a primary destination for travellers on the Grand Tour.
The composition focuses on the elevated podium and the remaining structural walls of the temple, positioned at the intersection of the Forum and the Via del Foro. The foreground displays the characteristic basalt paving stones of the Pompeian street, worn by centuries of cart traffic. Sommer utilised the natural light to define the textures of the volcanic stone and the weathered masonry of the temple structure. The image is presented within a decorative border, typical of the presentation style for commercial photographic prints of the era.
Sommer was known for his technical precision and his ability to document both the scale of the ruins and the specific details of the site. His photographs were often sold as souvenirs or collected in albums, serving as a visual record of the state of the excavations before modern restoration efforts altered the appearance of the site. This print offers a view of the temple as it appeared to visitors in the late Victorian period, documenting the intersection of classical history and nineteenth-century archaeological interest.
