Description
A dramatic interpretation of the Annunciation by El Greco, featuring his signature elongated figures and expressive, fluid brushwork.
This composition depicts the biblical moment of the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary. El Greco employs his characteristic elongated figures and dramatic, non-naturalistic lighting to convey the spiritual weight of the event. The scene is divided between the earthly realm, where Mary sits in a state of quiet reception, and the celestial sphere, populated by a swirling host of putti and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.
The colour palette is dominated by deep ochres, muted reds, and shadows that suggest a space beyond physical reality. El Greco rejects the balanced perspective of the High Renaissance in favour of a more subjective, expressive approach. The architecture, while present, serves to frame the figures rather than define a strict geometric space. The brushwork is loose and gestural, a hallmark of the artist's later period in Toledo, where he moved away from the precise detail of his earlier Italian training.
Mary is positioned to the left, her posture one of humble acknowledgement. Opposite her, Gabriel is suspended in mid-air, his robes rendered with fluid, sweeping strokes that suggest movement and divine energy. The upper portion of the canvas is filled with a turbulent sky, where the boundaries between the figures and the clouds become blurred. This work is one of several versions El Greco produced on this theme, reflecting his ongoing exploration of religious narratives through a highly personal visual language. The painting captures the tension between the physical world and the divine, a recurring theme in the artist's body of work.
