Jacob de Wit was a Dutch painter known for his mastery of light and his ability to create illusionistic effects. This work depicts the Annunciation, a subject frequently explored in European art. The composition follows a traditional arrangement, with the Virgin Mary positioned on the left, interrupted in her reading by the arrival of the Archangel Gabriel on the right. A dove, representing the Holy Spirit, descends from above, surrounded by a group of cherubs emerging from the clouds.

De Wit employs a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the deep red of the drapery and the blue of Mary's mantle. The lighting is theatrical, with a strong contrast between the illuminated figures and the shadowed background. This technique draws the eye to the interaction between the two primary figures. The brushwork is fluid, characteristic of the artist's approach to decorative painting, which often involved creating works for the interiors of grand houses in Amsterdam. The figures possess a grace and lightness that align with the Rococo aesthetic, moving away from the heavier forms of the preceding century.

As a specialist in 'witjes' (monochrome paintings imitating relief sculpture), de Wit brought a sculptural quality to his work, even when using colour.
