Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and this engraving demonstrates his technical control over the medium. The composition features the Archangel Michael, who stands with a calm, focused expression as he drives a long staff into the mouth of a grotesque, hybrid dragon. The creature is a complex assembly of reptilian scales, claws, and a snarling, demonic face, which contrasts with the serene, youthful appearance of the angel.

Schongauer uses a variety of hatching techniques to define the forms. The drapery of Michael's robes is rendered with long, flowing lines that suggest weight and movement, while the wings are articulated with fine, parallel strokes that capture the texture of feathers.
