The Artist and His Mother - Arshile Gorky

Arshile Gorky painted this work based on a photograph taken in Van in 1912, which depicted the artist as a young boy standing beside his mother, Shushanik. The original photograph was lost during the Armenian Genocide, and Gorky spent years attempting to reconstruct the image from memory. This process resulted in two distinct versions of the painting, with this particular iteration characterised by its simplified forms and muted, earthy palette.

The composition is notably flat, with the figures rendered in broad, unmodulated planes of colour. The mother sits in a rigid, frontal pose, her hands resting calmly in her lap, while the young Gorky stands to her left. The artist employs a restrained approach to detail, focusing instead on the psychological weight of the subjects. The white apron worn by the mother serves as a dominant visual element, creating a stark contrast against the darker tones of the background and the boy's clothing.

Throughout the painting, Gorky balances the influence of European modernism with his own personal history. The figures appear somewhat ethereal, as if emerging from a distant recollection. The lack of traditional depth or complex shading directs the viewer's attention to the expressions of the subjects, which remain fixed and solemn. By stripping away extraneous detail, Gorky creates a sense of stillness that permeates the entire canvas.
