Viktor Vasnetsov, a central figure in the Russian revivalist movement, painted The Baptism of Russia as part of his extensive work for the St Vladimir Cathedral in Kyiv. This composition depicts the historical conversion of Kievan Rus to Christianity in 988 AD, a moment of immense cultural shift. Prince Vladimir stands at the centre, his arms raised in a gesture of supplication and authority, surrounded by clergy and a vast, dense crowd of followers. The scene is framed by a monumental arch, which draws the eye toward the celestial light descending from above, symbolising divine sanction.
