The engagement took place in October 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars, as the French army retreated toward the Rhine. Vernet focuses on the chaotic action within a wooded area, where artillery and cavalry units clash amidst thick plumes of gunpowder smoke.

The composition employs a wide, panoramic view that draws the eye across the field toward the distant town of Hanau.
