Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) was a Hungarian painter and photographer as well as a professor in the Bauhaus school. He was highly influential in the development of both abstract art and photography. He argued for the integration of technology and industry into the arts. Moholy-Nagy experimented with a range of media, including painting, sculpture, film, and photography, often combining them in innovative ways. His work often explored the interplay of light, space, and movement. 'The Broken Marriage' is a gelatin silver print photomontage. The composition features a collage of photographic elements arranged in a constructed space. A figure with a headdress of cylindrical forms dominates the centre, while a disembodied hand reaches in from the side. The background is constructed from geometric planes and architectural elements, creating a sense of depth and spatial ambiguity.
